Cracow Podgórze and Schindler's Factory

Located in Cracow Podgórze at Lipowa street is the world-famous Schindler’s factory. Its operations began 2 years before the war when it was founded by three Jewish entrepreneurs. In 1939, the factory was owned by Oskar Schindler, who kept it running until 1945. Enamelled and tin products were produced in this factory. In his enamel factory, Schindler employed Jews whom he saved from displacement and being transported to concentration camps. To save prisoners, together with his accountant Itzhak Stern, he developed the famous Schindler list (which you might know from the equally named movie). Thanks to this list he bought and transported over 1100 people to a new factory in the Czech Republic, thereby saving their lives. Schindler kept in touch with the saved Jews until the end of his life.
